Burnaby Lake Regional Park is a large wildlife sanctuary located in the heart of Burnaby. It features hiking and walking trails as well as a nature house. There are also sports fields, a dock, and an off-leash dog park. The lake is home to many species of birds, including bald eagles, osprey, and ducks. You can take a boat out on the lake for a relaxing boat ride.
A bird’s eye view of the lake is provided by the park’s viewing tower. You can also enjoy a picnic and paddle on the lake. Paddling on the lake is one of the best ways to get close to the animals. For those who don’t want to paddle, you can also try the hiking trail around the lake.
To get to the park, you can drive up or down the Lougheed highway to reach the park. There are plenty of free parking spots. In addition, you can take public transportation to the park. Skytrain and transit buses will also stop at either side of the lake.
To walk the lake, you can start at the east end of the park. The Piper Lake Trail is a first-class walking trail that circles the lake. This scenic route features a viewing platform and interpretive signage. Visitors can also access the Burnaby Lake Rowing Pavilion. This pavilion has a history of hosting many events.
Another trail is the Southshore Trail, which runs across the shoreline of the lake. You can also take a short detour to the Conifer Trail. Bicyclists can also use the bike rack in front of the Nature House.
If you’re interested in exploring the lake by boat, you can visit the public canoe launch at the sports complex. The public canoe launch is not a place to rent boats, but it’s a great way to get out on the water. The sports complex is on 3677 Kensington Avenue.
On the south side of the lake, you’ll notice traffic noise from the freeway. However, the noise is less noticeable once the leaves are back. Regardless of your preference, you’ll find that Burnaby Lake has a lot to offer. Many different species of plants and animals are found in the area, including cougars, geese, and ducks. Whether you’re interested in kayaking, canoeing, or hiking, you’ll find a way to have fun at Burnaby Lake Regional Park.
While you’re in the area, you might also want to check out the Burnaby Sports Complex. There you’ll find an equestrian center and stables. Also, you can join in some fun races hosted by the Burnaby Horsemen’s Association. During weekends, you may even be able to participate in Fun Runs.
Finally, there is a 10-kilometre walking trail around the lake. It’s a level path through mixed forest. The trail has blind corners and narrower sections. Be aware of other users while on the trails.
